Psatti

As parrots, the Psatti are much smaller than most other sapient species in Gaeana. They average 60 – 80 cm (24” – 31”) in length, including tail. Their tail generally accounts for 8 – 12 cm (3” – 5”) of their total size. They average 1.4 – 1.7 kg (1 – 2 lbs.) in weight.

Psatti feather color is usually gray or a drab blue, green or red. The most common is gray. Eye color is generally yellow.

The psatti are talkative and thoughtful. They do not build cities. They do live in communities. Their days are spent largely discussing ideas and concepts that many others would find obscure or unimportant.

They are peaceful and sociable. The psatti, though not found in large numbers outside their native region of Ela Gris, are unanimously respected and admired. They were the cause of the Ahl language (the pidgin used by merchants and travelers throughout Gaeana). They also created the unified system of monetary equivalents, measured in Talons and Claws. Psatti are curious, sometimes to a fault, and it is this curiosity which takes them from their island homes. They are also atheists.

Psatti are, if available, used in negotiations. They are known to be opinionated, but fair. They act well as judges, willing to speak their mind in earnest about their feeling for a situation, but able to make a just ruling according to law—even if it contradicts their beliefs. A psatti is never comfortable alone. While they enjoy the company of anyone willing and able to join them in deep discussion, they prefer the companionship of their own kind.

Being a very visually-oriented species, like humans, psatti love embellishments and finery. Though they have few real craftsmen, they can usually trade knowledge or services for crafted items they desire. Colorful tail or feet dyes are popular with some, like dying one's hair is to humans on earth.

Psatti are ruled, if you can call it that, by the Council of Nine. The Council presides over their annual meetings at Aeteru Forum and work only as advisors. Aeteru Forum occurs at a plateau on Aeteru (a sacred mountain and dead volcano) once each year. All have a voice. This is also when the Council is selected, if it changes. Members of the Council are generally among the oldest of the psatti and are elected for life. This idea of equality amongst people and respect for the wise permeates psatti thought and culture.
