Toka are primates which are closely related to humans. They are much shorter than the average Human. Their average full-grown height varies little between individuals and is approximately 120 cm (3’ 11”) for males and 110 cm (3’ 7”) for females. Weight for males is generally around 32 kg (70 lbs.) and females are generally 27 kg (60 lbs.).
Toka skin colors include all shades of brown with some having green tones to a mild degree. They have little hair on their bodies. In fact, they often appear to have no hair at all on casual glance. Their hair is generally the same tone as their skin and blends in.
Their eyes are slightly larger than those of humans and have iris colors including all human shades with the most common being emerald green.
Toka possess a prehensile tail. Their tail’s length is generally three-quarters of their height. Tail dexterity is a sexually selected trait. In other words, those with higher manual dexterity in their tail are more attractive to the opposite sex.
Toka are a matriarchal society. Individual communities are generally run by 3 women, the maid, the mother and the crone. This council of three are elected by their peers. The maid is always of adult age, but has borne no children. The mother has borne children, but is still fertile. The crone may or may not have borne children, but has gone through menopause. Each speak for, and are responsible to, their peer group. They have an equal vote, so the voices of each generation are heard, but the actual ruler and figurehead is always the crone.
Like their most similar relatives, the bonobo, toka are very sexual. It is not ugly, hidden or dirty. Sexuality is the balance and social glue which strengthens bonds and eases tensions. This appreciation and reverence for sexuality is also a prime reason for their matriarchal structure—the three divisions each correspond to phases of reproduction and femininity. In portrayals of the goddess Tokina, the mother all toka worship, she is always portrayed naked with appropriate effect and importance placed upon her physical attributes of mother- and woman-hood.
Toka are peaceful and playful. They have no word in their native tongue for war between toka. Violence happens rarely. When it does it generally ends with some type of intercourse, thus squabbles are dismissed.
Money is largely unimportant to toka, and they are often taken advantage of due to this. They desire peace and for all to have as they need. Their communities are tight-knit and all follow the "it takes a village" philosophy. They are omnivores, though they prefer to eat vegetation. Herbalism and botanical aptitude is common amongst toka. They have an extreme love and reverence for the earth and all that lives on it.
Toka are very skilled at creating potions, salves and tinctures using their skills in herbalism. They have cures, aphrodisiacs and poisons of many types. These are the most common items they have for trade.
Virtually every toka has at least one craft. Many have two or three. When "free time" is available, they spend their hours pursuing these activities.
Toka homes are unlike any that you will find elsewhere. They are arboreal. However, they don't just live in trees—they live with trees. Using Wood Gaeana Stones and the botanical techniques and tools they have perfected for hundreds of years, toka actually create their buildings and structures of living vegetation. The walls are branches and twigs woven together and living in balance. They craft their surroundings with the care of a bonsai master, all the while giving reverence to the life in those same trees.
Toka clothing is generally simple and functional. They do not take time for pomp and pride in clothing. However, they do appreciate natural beauty and the ability to enhance beauty through the gifts of Gaeana. Makeup, hairstyle and cleanliness are ways toka express their individual beauty.
